How Your Nightly Rituals Help You Save Money

Updated: Apr 3, 2020

The following is an article “How Your Nightly Rituals Help you Save Money” by Marc Primo.

Most of us look forward to a relaxing evening after a long day’s work. While we spend time preparing for bed and cooling down our weary bodies, little did we know that there are ways that help us save money while doing our nightly routine.

If you think that being busy working during the entire day is the only way you could make money, then think again. Catching up on only four to five hours of sleep won’t do your body good and may render you lethargic at the office the following day. Tiring yourself out can make you less productive so you might want to consider setting up a nightly routine that allows you to have proper rest.

Here are four simple tips you could do to improve your wellbeing and eventually save you more money.

Avoid blue light. Blue light has been proven to decrease melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep naturally. Putting your smartphone down or refraining from facing the screen of your laptop or PC at least an hour before you go to bed will help you sleep faster and longer. Set a schedule from when you can answer out-of-work emails or download apps that reduce blue light like f.lux, Redshift, or Iris if you really have something important to check online during the night. Avoiding television and your electronic gadgets in the evening gives you more energy the next day and cuts down your electric bill too.

Unburden your mind. Here’s one night-time exercise that has been proven to put your thoughts in perspective prior to facing another busy day. Simply jot down your thoughts on a piece of paper and divide them into two groups. The first group should consist of things that you are able to solve during the day, and the other for things that you haven’t solved yet. This relieves your mind of stress from your busy day, while reminding you of what else needs your attention next. Most people experience difficulty in sleeping because of overthinking concerns from work. This system will train your mind to relax and help you manage your time better.

List down important tasks. While you are writing down your goals for the following day, rank them according to priority and set your mind to accomplish the important ones tomorrow before getting some shut-eye. This way, you can avoid worrying about pending things at the office. Try to do this practice on a daily basis and you’ll soon feel satisfied and productive at work everyday. Save money by also listing down your budget allowances for the next day and focus on what you really need rather than waste money on unnecessary things.

Don’t snooze. National Geographic’s documentary Sleepless in America had experts tell us that pressing the snooze button is entirely pointless. This is because sleeping after the snooze button sounds off and wakes you up won’t give you any quality sleep anyway and will just waste 20 more minutes of your precious time. It also confuses your mind and can make you groggier throughout the day. Sleep experts also advise that waking up at the exact same time everyday, including weekends, is healthier. Making a habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time daily will do your body well and keep you from getting sick.
